A day in Venice

with Tamron 17-70mm F/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD

Foto: Thomas Adorff

Thomas Adorff makes a short trip to Venice. The plan: take photos for a day in the empty lagoon city. Only one lens is included: the powerful standard zoom lens 17-70mm F/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD.

Venice has its own charm in every season. Photo trainer Thomas Adorff especially likes to go there in winter to take pictures in the old winding alleyways. Since his traditional photo tour could not take place this year, he decided after Christmas to take a spontaneous short trip without an overnight stay.

"After driving all night, we were in Venice at half past five with a camera and lens", says Thomas. "With its crumbling plaster and small street lamps, the empty and dark city has a fairytale flair that can be captured perfectly with a small, lightweight APS-C camera and a fast zoom lens with VC image stabiliser, even without a tripod." Therefore, Thomas has taken all images with the compact 17-70mm F/2.8, which for him is the perfect balance between maximum performance and high ease of use. No matter which city Thomas visits, he prefers to drift through the small streets with open eyes.

Worthwhile detours

"Of course I always have a few photographic fixed points. But if I always take the direct route, I miss out on a lot of worthwhile motifs", he says. For the day in Venice, Thomas has only three places firmly planned. At sunrise he wants to stand on the Ponte dell’Accademia and photograph what is probably the most famous panorama of Venice, the view over the Canal Grande to the baroque domed church of Santa Maria della Salute. Then off to St. Mark's Square, whose arcades shine in magical light at the golden hour. And finally the Rialto Bridge is on the program, which Thomas wants to photograph in soft back light.

When he gets back into his car later that evening, Thomas is tired but happy. "With the 17-70mm F/2.8, I was not only able to take all the pictures I had planned, but also capture many other great motifs."
